I have updated the gallery with scans of the full feature of Suicide Squad in the December 2015 issue of Empire magazine.
The reboot/remake/whatever of RoboCop remains, for us, one of the more pleasant sci-fi surprises of recent times. Appreciating it wasn’t everyone’s tin of baby food, we liked that it had ideas of its own, tried something different, and took something of a gamble. It would have been even better had the need for a PG-13 certificate been removed, and thus RoboCop could have a proper gun. But that’s how things are right now, it seems.
The film proved to be a decent hit for Sony and its assorted distribution partners around the globe, with it bringing in $242m on its cinema release, and plenty more on home formats. Granted, it wasn’t cheap to make ($100m), and it didn’t do the business in the US ($58m), but elsewhere in the world – in China and the UK in particular – RoboCop was a good hit.
That said, there’s hardly been active chatter about coming back for another film. So we had a look around to find out what was happening.
As it turns out, it’s not a closed project at Sony, although it doesn’t appear to be one the studio is heavily pursuing. Nonetheless, we understand that it is still welcoming pitches for a further RoboCop venture. Our source confirmed that Sony hasn’t shut the project down, although it doesn’t appear to be a high priority.
If a further RoboCop film does get off the ground, then it’s a fair bet it’d be a Chinese co-production. The RoboReboot took $50m in China alone, and amongst the many Hollywood movies that have partnered with Chinese studios, a RoboCop 2.0 would actually lend itself to being partly set in China, given a thread from the first film.
It’s still in the balance whether RoboCop in Joel Kinnaman guise will return. But it’s certainly not a closed book.
