‘RoboCop’ Sequel Not Dead Yet

The reboot/remake/whatever of RoboCop remains, for us, one of the more pleasant sci-fi surprises of recent times. Appreciating it wasn’t everyone’s tin of baby food, we liked that it had ideas of its own, tried something different, and took something of a gamble. It would have been even better had the need for a PG-13 certificate been removed, and thus RoboCop could have a proper gun. But that’s how things are right now, it seems.

The film proved to be a decent hit for Sony and its assorted distribution partners around the globe, with it bringing in $242m on its cinema release, and plenty more on home formats. Granted, it wasn’t cheap to make ($100m), and it didn’t do the business in the US ($58m), but elsewhere in the world – in China and the UK in particular – RoboCop was a good hit.

That said, there’s hardly been active chatter about coming back for another film. So we had a look around to find out what was happening.

As it turns out, it’s not a closed project at Sony, although it doesn’t appear to be one the studio is heavily pursuing. Nonetheless, we understand that it is still welcoming pitches for a further RoboCop venture. Our source confirmed that Sony hasn’t shut the project down, although it doesn’t appear to be a high priority.

If a further RoboCop film does get off the ground, then it’s a fair bet it’d be a Chinese co-production. The RoboReboot took $50m in China alone, and amongst the many Hollywood movies that have partnered with Chinese studios, a RoboCop 2.0 would actually lend itself to being partly set in China, given a thread from the first film.

It’s still in the balance whether RoboCop in Joel Kinnaman guise will return. But it’s certainly not a closed book.

Joel Kinnaman to Star in Netflix Sci-Fi Drama ‘Altered Carbon’

Former Killing star Joel Kinnaman is returning to the Netflix fold once more, this time to topline the futuristic drama Altered Carbon.

Based on Richard K. Morgan’s 2002 science fiction novel, the series is set in the 25th century, when the human mind has been digitized and the soul can be transferred from one body to the next.

Kinnaman will star as Takeshi Kovacs, a former elite interstellar warrior known as an Envoy who has been imprisoned for 500 years. After getting downloaded into a future he previously tried to stop, Takeshi must solve a single murder — in a world where technology has made death nearly obsolete — in order to earn a chance at a new life on Earth.

‘Suicide Squad’ Gets PG-13 Rating

It’s official: Warner Bros. Suicide Squad has landed a PG-13 rating, the norm for summer tentpoles hoping to play to the widest audience possible, including families.

Every other film directed by David Ayer, including his most recent pic, Fury, was rated R.

Hollywood studios, however, are loath to slap their superhero offerings with an R rating. The one film daring to break the rule was Fox’s Deadpool, which stunned in earning north of $772 million at the worldwide box office earlier this year despite the restrictive rating.

Deadpool has prompted plenty of debate about whether other studios should follow suit; so far, no one else has been willing to make that move.

Generally speaking, there can be a fair amount of violence in a PG-13 title, but language and sex are another matter.

Suicide Squad, which revolves around an irreverent band of supervillains, is rated PG-13 for sequences of violence and action throughout, disturbing behavior, suggestive content and language, according to the ratings board.

Set to open in theaters Aug. 5, Suicide Squad stars Will Smith, Jared Leto, Margot Robbie, Joel Kinnaman, Viola Davis, Jai Courtney, Jay Hernandez, Adwale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Ike Barinholtz, Scott Eastwood and Cara Delevingne.

Thunder Road Pictures’ Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee are producing alongside The Fyzz Facility’s Wayne Marc Godfrey, Robert Jones, Mark Lane and James Harris, and Ollie Madden. The Fyzz Facility is also financing the film. Thunder Road’s Jonathan Fuhrman and Magnolia Entertainment’s Shelley Browning are the executive producers.

Joel Kinnaman and Mireille Enos Reunite for Amazon’s ‘Hanna’ TV Series

Are your The Killing hearts ready? Joel and Mireille are reuniting to lead the TV adaptation of the 2011 film, Hanna! However, reports also say that this marks Joel’s exit on Altered Carbon, should the series officially get a second season.

HOLLYWOOD REPORTER – Joel Kinnaman and Mireille Enos are reuniting on the small screen.

The stars of AMC-turned-Netflix drama The Killing have been tapped to topline Amazon Studios’ adaptation of Hanna, with newcomer Esme Creed-Miles set for the title role. Kinnaman’s casting comes while generating strong reviews for his role in the Netflix drama Altered Carbon. The actor will not return for a likely second season of the show after he signed a one-year deal to star.

Hanna, picked up to series in May, is based on Joe Wright’s 2011 film that starred Saoirse Ronan. It is a high-concept thriller and coming-of-age drama that follows the journey of an extraordinary young girl as she evades the relentless pursuit of an off-book CIA agent and tries to unearth the truth behind who she is.

Enos will take on the role of Marissa, an efficient and ruthless agent who has risen up the ranks of the CIA. However, beneath her cool exterior is a deeply buried secret that continues to haunt her. The reappearance of Hanna and her father, Erik, threaten to expose the past she has worked to repress.

Kinnaman will portray Erik, a hardened, intuitive and uncompromising soldier and mercenary who, for the past 15 years, has raised his daughter in the remote forests of northern Poland. Isolated from the world he once knew, he has trained Hanna in every method of survival, with his only goal, to keep her safe. But his teenage daughter begins to seek freedom from the restricted haven he has created.

Creed-Miles (Dark River) will take on her first leading role as Hanna, an extraordinary teenage girl who feels she must leave the confinement of the forest to experience life. But once in the world, Hanna is hunted by Marissa and others connected to Hanna’s hidden origins and exceptional abilities.

“I’m thrilled that Hanna has managed to attract a visionary director and actors of the caliber of Mireille and Joel to play our adult leads. And in Esme Creed-Miles I believe we have discovered a star of the future — she is going to be a very special Hanna,” said Farr. “Hanna aims to be both a raw-knuckle ride and a deeply touching family drama. It has the visceral excitement of a genuine conspiracy thriller but also the simple humanity of a rites of passage drama. Hanna is in a very unusual family. She’s a very special teenager. But all teenagers think they’re abnormal. She’s just a little more abnormal than most.”

Ari Folman Set to Direct ‘The Horse Boy’ with Lea Seydoux & Joel Kinnaman

Léa Seydoux and Joel Kinnaman are set to topline the film adaptation of Rupert Isaacson’s New York Times bestseller, The Horse Boy. Israeli filmmaker, Ari Folman, is set to direct. The film is scheduled to start filming in October in the U.K., Mongolia, and in Joel’s home country, Sweden!

VARIETY – The film follows the journey of Emily and Jonathan’s son, Noah, an autistic child who rarely talks and isn’t improving despite his parents’ efforts to connect with him. When Jonathan notices that Noah is more peaceful and seems more able to communicate while riding horses, he sets off to take his family for a ride through the Mongolian plains to meet shamans in order to cure his son.

“‘Horse Boy’ is a passion project for Folman, who said he felt compelled to explore this important story in a cinematic way. “‘Horse Boy’ is a love story about a man and a woman who, against all odds are willing to take the biggest possible risk, not only to rescue their son, but to rescue their love for each other, their memories of the bond they used to share,” said Folman, who added that Mongolia will be portrayed in a unique way in the film.

‘The Secrets We Keep’ Sells Wide

HOLLYWOOD REPORTER – Noomi Rapace and Joel Kinnaman starrer The Secrets We Keep, Israeli director Yuval Adler’s follow-up to his Berlin out-of-competition entry The Operative, has pretty much sold out worldwide at Berlin’s European Film Market.

Stuart Ford’s AGC International has wrapped up multiple territory presales for the upcoming period thriller.

AGC closed deals for The Secrets We Keep in France (Amazon), Germany (Universum), Italy (Cloud Nine), Scandinavia (Svensk), Japan (Tohokushinsha), China (Jushi) and with Sun Distribution for Spain, Portugal and Latin America. Vertical Entertainment nabbed rights for the film across most of Eastern Europe, with CTB/Nashe Kino taking the title in CIS. Other deals include ones for Greece (Odeon), Indonesia (Cinema 21), Taiwan (Applause), Israel (United King) and the Middle East (Selim Ramia).

Adler, in Berlin for the world premiere Sunday night of his latest, the spy thriller The Operative, starring Diane Kruger and Martin Freeman, met with buyers one-on-one at AGC’s suite at the Ritz Carlton earlier in the week to pitch his new project. Rapace, who is an executive producer on the project, was at AGC’s offices pitching the project to buyers in Berlin.

Prometheus actress Rapace will play Maja, a holocaust survivor rebuilding her life in New York after World War II. But a random encounter with an eerily familiar man (Suicide Squad‘s Joel Kinnaman) — who seems to resemble her chief tormentor as she fled from the Nazi occupation in WWII — sets Maja off on a revenge mission. When she takes matters into her own hands, kidnapping the man, Maja sets in motion a series of memories and events that will change her whole perception of the truth.

Joel to Reprise Role on ‘The Suicide Squad’

After several speculations on whether we will see Joel again as Rick Flagg, Discussing Film has confirmed that he will be back for The Suicide Squad!

In 2019, we have ‘The Suicide Squad’ going into production in September in Atlanta with James Gunn set to write and direct and Peter Safran set to produce. Fans wondered who from the original film would return, and as of writing, it has been revealed that Margot Robbie will reprise her role as Harley Quinn, Jai Courtney will reprise his role as Captain Boomerang, Viola Davis will reprise her role as Amanda Waller and although Will Smith will not return, Idris Elba will instead take over the role of Deadshot.

However, fans have wondered about whether Joel Kinnaman will reprise their respective role as Rick Flagg, and now we can confirm that Joel Kinnaman will reprise his role as Rick Flagg in James Gunn’s ‘The Suicide Squad’.

James Gunn’s ‘The Suicide Squad’ seems to be continuing the story of Task Force X whilst building the universe with Collider reporting that Ratcatcher, Peacemaker, King Shark and Polka Dot Man will feature in the new team roster as well as Revenge of the Fans reporting that an alien woman will also appear in the film (maybe Rampage?).

Apple TV+ Launch Date

It was revealed today during the Apple event that their streaming service, Apple TV+, will launch on November 1st for $4.99 per month. Starting today, when you buy a new Apple device, you get a free one-year subscription of Apple TV+. Along with the launch, several of their original series will be available, including For All Mankind! Here’s the official synopsis they released:

A new series from Ronald D. Moore, imagines what would have happened if the global space race never ended and the space program remained the cultural centerpiece of America’s hopes and dreams.

‘For All Mankind’ Officially Renewed for Season 2

Since about a month ago, there had been words about For All Mankind quietly getting a renewal for a second season. In his recent appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Joel also mentioned the renewal. Now, there’s finally an official announcement!

HOLLYWOOD REPORTER – The Hailee Steinfeld dark comedy Dickinson, the Jason Momoa drama See and Ron Moore’s space race series For All Mankind have all officially been renewed for second seasons mere days after launching as part of Apple’s first-ever scripted roster. An Apple spokeswoman confirmed the pickups Thursday.

As The Hollywood Reporter revealed in an Oct. 15 feature story about Apple’s long and bumpy road to Hollywood, production on Dickinson‘s second season has already been underway for months in New York. The renewal for See also comes as little surprise as it was quietly picked up for a second season months ago. (The series comes with a price tag of some $240 million for its two seasons.) For All Mankind, meanwhile, had also quietly been picked up for additional seasons months ago. Production on the sophomore season started in October.

Joel Kinnaman to Star as NFL Player Jerry Smith

Joel is set to executive-produce and star as NFL player Jerry Smith in a new football & civil rights drama for Fandomodo Films. It tackles the close friendship between Smith and his longtime Washington Redskins teammate Brig Owens. Production is set to start in the third quarter of 2021!

VARIETY – The film is set at the height of the civil rights movement between the mid-1960s and mid-1970s, during a time of societal upheaval. Smith was secretly gay — a fact he kept hidden until his death from AIDS in 1986 — and Owens faced constant challenges and bigotry as a Black man while attending law school. Through it all, the men formed a close bond to always be there for each other regardless of differences or obstacles.

“Jerry Smith was a star on the field, but was never able to find fulfillment in his personal life,” Kinnaman said. “He had Brig to help him through his struggle, but to this day so many young people don’t have anyone to turn to when wrestling with homosexuality — especially in the sports world.  That’s one of the reasons this story needs to be told. It’s as relevant today as it was 40 years ago.”

Smith led the NFL in career touchdowns by a tight end when he retired in 1977 and was popular among his teammates despite keeping his private life a secret. Owens is second all-time for the Redskins (currently renamed the Washington Football Team) in career interceptions. After retirement, he finished his law degree and became an executive director of the Players Association he helped to create.

“Injustice for one person is injustice for every person,” said Owens. “I hope audiences will find our battles inspiring as we all come to grips with how much work is yet to be done to confront the prejudice that is still so deeply rooted in America.”

“Before Colin Kaepernick, there was Brig Owens,” Kaan said. “He stood up for the rights of players at a time when nobody else dared speak. He fought for justice on the field and off, and protected Jerry at a time when America was about to hear about the Stonewall riots for the first time.”

Vertical Entertainment Nabs ‘Brothers by Blood’

Vertical Entertainment has acquired distribution rights to the crime drama, Brothers by Blood, which was previously known as The Sound of Philadelphia, starring Matthias Schoenaerts and Joel Kinnaman. It is set for release in select theaters and on demand on January 22, 2021.

VARIETY – Jérémie Guez wrote, directed and produced “Brothers By Blood,” based on Pete Dexter’s 1991 novel “Brotherly Love.” Set in Philly, the film follows Schoenaerts’ character named Peter, who watches helplessly a his sister is murdered — a brutal occurrence that leaves him with lasting generational wounds. The cast also includes Maika Monroe and Ryan Phillippe.

“‘Brothers by Blood’ explores family ties and the weight of the past that is transmitted from generation to generation, themes that have obsessed me since I was a kid and influenced me both as a writer and a director,” Guez said. “It has been an immense privilege to adapt Pete Dexter’s novel for cinema and an even greater privilege to be able to do so with such formidable actors. I am beyond thrilled to bring this story to audiences everywhere.”

“It’s fitting that a thriller like ‘Brothers by Blood’ be set against the backdrop of The City of Brotherly Love,” said Rich Goldberg, co-president of Vertical Entertainment. “With a plot that keeps you guessing, the film examines the costs of family loyalty and what anyone is willing to do — or not do — to prove that loyalty. We can’t wait to bring a film as exciting as this one to audiences everywhere.”

‘For All Mankind’ Renewed for Season 4

Exciting news! For All Mankind has been renewed for a fourth season and is headed to the 21st century. It was announced at the end of the show’s panel at the 2022 Comic-Con International yesterday. Congratulations to the cast and crew for the well-deserved renewal!

For All Mankind made it to Mars in the third season of Apple TV+’s alt-history space race series. Now the drama created by Ronald D. Moore, Ben Nedivi and Matt Wolpert is going even further in time and space.

The series starring Joel Kinnaman and Krys Marshall has been renewed for a fourth season, it was revealed Friday at end of the show’s Comic-Con panel in San Diego.

“I’m thrilled that we get to keep going forward in this amazing story,” Moore told Deadline. “Right from the beginning it was my hope that it would be a long, multi-year journey. “It’s gratifying to see what we’ve done and I’m looking forward to seeing what we can do in the future.”

“I couldn’t be more excited to continue evolving our show into the 2000s in Season 4,” said Wolpert.

“The reaction to Season 3 so far has been incredible,” noted Nedivi. “I’m thrilled Apple is giving us this opportunity to continue telling our story. Ron, Matt and I have always had a long-term plan for the show and the deeper we get into our alt history, the more the audience will start to see that vision come to life.”

Production on Season 4 of the geopolitical and increasingly interstellar For All Mankind is set to start next month, with a debut likely next year on the Apple streaming service.

Joel Kinnaman to Star in ‘Sympathy for the Devil’

Joel is set to star in a new psychological thriller, Sympathy for the Devil, alongside Nicolas Cage. Production has already started in Las Vegas. This sounds like another interesting project!

Written by Luke Paradise (“Lost on a Mountain in Maine”), “Sympathy for the Devil” follows “The Driver” (Kinnaman) as he finds himself in a high-stakes game of cat and mouse after being forced to drive a mysterious man known as “The Passenger” (Cage). That sets things up for a white-knuckle ride.

“This is a tour de force featuring two incredible actors,” said producer Allan Ungar. “As an acclaimed filmmaker, Yuval has assembled the perfect cast and brought a unique and gritty vision to this film that will be sure to capture audiences.”

Variety

Joel Kinnaman to Star in ‘The Silent Hour’

Joel is set to star in another action-thriller movie entitled The Silent Hour, which will be directed by Brad Anderson. No additional casting has been announced, but the film will begin production in early 2023.

The Boston-set crime drama will see Kinnaman play a police detective who suffers a workplace accident that leaves him hearing impaired. Sixteen months later, as an interpreter for the police department, he battles a team of corrupt cops trying to eliminate a deaf murder witness in an apartment building.

The Hollywood Reporter

Joel to Star in ‘Debriefing the President’

Another project for Joel! He is set to star in the interrogation drama Debriefing the President, an adaptation of the book of the same name written by John Nixon. The project was initially set as a feature film, but it will now go forward as a limited series.

The Killing and Suicide Squad alum Joel Kinnaman is set to star in AR Content’s adaptation of John Nixon’s Debriefing the President. Kinnaman will star as former CIA analyst Nixon who wrote the non-fiction book about his experience of being the first American to identify and interrogate Saddam Hussein following his 2003 capture.

Nixon was a senior leadership analyst with the CIA from 1998-2011 who regularly wrote for and briefed those at the most senior levels of the U.S. government and later taught leadership analysis to the new generation of analysts coming at the Sherman Kent School, the agency’s in-house analytic training center.

After confirming the prisoner was indeed Hussein, who had a known tribal tattoo on the back of his right hand and a scar from a 1959 bullet wound, Nixon began interrogating Hussein and was surprised by his findings. Instead of a ruthless despot bent on stockpiling weapons of mass destruction, Hussein had turned his foreign policy decision-making to his lieutenants and seemed more focused on writing a novel.

Hussein had also failed to understand why he had become the focus of U.S. anger after 9/11 and Nixon came away in disbelief that America’s intelligence services and the George W. Bush administration had been so wrong in its reasons for plunging the country into the shock-and-awe origins of an Iraqi occupation.

“When I received this beautiful adaptation of John Nixon’s memoir, I was immediately thrilled to participate,” said Kinnamen. “It’s a very intelligent character drama where the psychological cat and mouse game between John Nixon and Saddam Hussein will also shed new light on the chaos behind the second Iraq war. I couldn’t be more excited to be making this cinematic piece with Alexander Rodnyansky and his talented team of producers.”

Rodnyansky added: “I am happy and excited for Joel to join Debriefing the President. I believe we have found the best actor to play a complex and nuanced character that is John Nixon. For years, I have been a great admirer of Joel’s work both in film and television and his commitment and involvement in the development of our project made him integral to this story.”

Deadline

After being attacked by a hostile extraterrestrial lifeform, their lives — not just their relationship — wind up at stake, as they fight with a humanoid beast to stop their abduction to an unknown and terrifying alien world.

Wyck Godfrey and Marty Bowen will produce the film for Temple Hill Entertainment (SmileTwilight franchise), with Ford on board to exec produce alongside Temple Hill’s John Fischer. AGC International will launch sales in Cannes, with UTA Independent Film Group co-repping U.S. rights.

“We’re delighted to extend our relationship with Neill, who is a master of the sci-fi and horror genres,” said Ford in a statement. “Jeremy Slater’s taut terrifying screenplay is a perfect match for Neill’s visual talents and the proven audience-pleasing instincts of our partners at Temple Hill.”

Added Godfrey, “We’re so excited to be working with Neill and Joel and everyone at AGC to bring THEY FOUND US to life. The otherworldly horror and breathless suspense at the center of Jeremy’s script is merely the backdrop for an all too relatable and emotional story of a father and teenage daughter grappling with their differences and working through their estrangement.”
